Attachment / Trauma
Therapy

Attachment at its core is about connection. Our survival depends on our ability to be and feel close with others. Our attachment system lays its foundation in childhood. This system flourishes when our caregivers provide a warm, loving, available and reliable environment. Studies have shown that when healthy attachments are established and maintained throughout childhood, it helps build our emotional resilience.

Trauma is not always defined as a catastrophic event. Trauma can be experienced from those who were supposed to protect us. Relational trauma or complex trauma may be defined as neglect, emotional abuse, physical abuse, sexual abuse, betrayal, or manipulation by someone close to you. Early childhood trauma, especially at the hands of a caregiver can lead to unclear and inaccurate perceptions of ourselves and the world around us. This creates a need for survival versus connection, rewiring our brain as a way to try to protect ourselves. Often these experiences impact how we feel about ourselves, as well as our future ability to love and trust others.

Through the work of attachment and trauma therapy, you can heal from your past and move forward. Healing from your relational traumatic experiences allows you to form a more secure sense of self and create healthier relationships with the important people in your life.

Our brains are wired for connection, but trauma rewires them for protection

Trauma is not about the event - it is about the individual perception of the event. Trauma may look like:

Not being seen or heard

Being denied your reality or emotions

Parents who pressure you to achieve or overly focus on appearances

Having a parent who has trouble regulating their own emotions

Infidelity or miscarriage

Job loss

Neglect

Emotional, physical, or sexual abuse

Betrayal

Manipulation

Narcissistic abuse

Conflict with family members

Witness of domestic violence

Intimate partner violence

Boundary violation

Bullying

Chronic mental or physical illness

Divorce or break up

Loss of a loved one
